Birds of Prey on the move!

Peregrine Falcon - Acrylic on paper 11x14
Ah, Birds you say?” “Something for spring.” Yes Maybe, that’s when they come back. Songbirds are best seen in spring. But fall is a great time to watch Birds of Prey.
To get closer to my wild subjects I did volunteer work for the Audubon Center and went Hawk banding and songbird banding with my mentor in my wildlife rehab training.
It was so amazing; I never knew there was such diversity and color among birds.
How could I have missed all this wonderful “Sky Confetti”?
This brings me to the first signs of fall – autumn migrations.
So when you step outside take a look around and up.
Have some fun and treat it like a treasure hunt.

Here is a tip for finding some of those birds leaving town.
The best time to see birds on the move is when we get a cold snap and or on a windy day with a North West wind.
and some links;
Check out the Audubon Society * http://ny.audubon.org/ to learn more about some good places to spot migratory birds or email Education coordinator, Larry Federman of Audubon NY at birderlarry@verizon.net  or JOHN BURROUGHS of the NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY http://www.jbnhs.org/ or ebird.org.(upstate NY) View and explore a real-time, online, program, eBird collects observations from birders like you and shares them.
As “they” say Birds of a Feather stick together. So I hope to see you, my fine feathered friends, around town (looking up of course).
This is a painting I did from life and if you're interested it's available as a print.

Sweet little puppy of mine

I have spent many years working with animals of all kinds and spent time with people from all walks of life & there is on thing I know for sure "Doody Happens".

I would like to share some thoughts on the subject.
Did you know there are about 77.5 million dog owners in the United States alone? With so many Dogs and a countless number of other animals, domestic and wild that we encounter every day, teaching children how to connect and relate to them is important  for our future.

One of the biggest hitches with owning a pet is the “bathroom” issue.
Where will they go and who will clean up after them?
This is just the reality of owning a pet. This can be very stressful for any pet owner and can affect and disrupt the whole household if the “doody” is where it’s not wanted.

Try Communicating with a child about their feelings and how their pet might feel. This could lead to a better connection and insight to others -pets and people alike.

The book is especially for people with kids and pets and designed to help kids relate to animals and connect to their own feelings.

So I say to all, when you step in (you know what) and it stresses you out, remember,
it's  good luck and "it happens".

Love and understanding is key.

This is what happens when you spend so much time with animals!
You write a children’s’ book about puppies and what you think
your puppy is doing (doody) and where she does it.
I recently wrote a book with all of my pets as characters

“Little Puppy & the Mystery of the Doody in the Hallway”

Wild Thoughts

                                                            www.joannesullam.com    May Flowers
It was a rainy April day after a long winter that I sat in my chair dreaming of my dream garden. My thoughts stray to last spring when I was on a very tight budget that did not allow for my dream garden, but still excited about my piddles of flowers and what the color scheme would be (Artist before gardener). I went to the garden center. Happily I planted away, first the front of the house then I made my way up to the deck. Oh what a glorious sunny day it was.
Then as I look out into the field, what joy! Bella, the fawn I had raised had come by for a visit! I called out to her and she headed towards the house.
My day simply could not get any better!
As I turned the corner to the front of the house there was my beautiful Bella eating the last of the red geraniums!! The Eric Clapton song (From Derek & the Dominos) started to play in my head (My version) “Bella’s” bottom blues.
She even got to the flowers on the table (I didn’t think she would raid the table too).
I was going to plant them for the hummingbirds and it had only been a passing thought (Hmm, I wonder if Bella would eat the flowers). Well, I had my answer and there she was; looking so innocent with those big eyes. I could almost hear her say,
                        “Thanks for the snack Mom”.
Oh, how I love gardening but I love Bella more, and all of her friends.
After all that’s why I moved to the country so I can see the wildlife in my back (and) front   yard.

You can decide to embrace or fight.
I say embrace!
There are plenty of wildlife friendly plants out there.

(I do confess I am still trying to out smart a squirrel)
Remember to dream big and share that dream and a full belly for our
furry and feathered friends.
Happy Gardening!

Earth Day 2011 Be Good to our Mother

Earth Day 2011

Be Good to our Mother

Wild Thoughts by JoAnne Sullam

April 22, 2011 is Earth Day

It’s the little things that count.

Have you ever heard someone say it was the little things that made or unmade their relationship?

They would say it wasn’t anything big it was “all the little things”

that (fill in the blank).

You can’t pick up a paper or turn on the TV (I don’t have one) Ok well, I do have a TV but it only plays what I put in the DVD player.

But I digress, and the point I am trying to make is that it can be scary if you think about it.

Birds falling from the sky- fish from the ocean washing up on shore.

But what can you do? Whatever you can, I hope, and what does that mean to all of us that are just trying to survive the day, the economy and live the best life we can

(I hope).

May I suggest that it is the little things that count, being thoughtful to our mother earth.

The earth belongs to us all, every creature, every tree, bird and drop of rain.

You can only do what you can do. What that means to you and what that means to me can be very different. If you plant a tree for earth day great. If not consider-

The little things. Every day. Simply ask yourself what can I do today?

This planet earth is our Mother that gives life to us all and just imagine our Mother saying what wonderful children she has and how good they are to her.

”Its the little things they do for me that I love the most” (fill in the blank). I am not going to give you any specifics because it’s all been said, we’ve heard it all a thousand times, what we should be doing, what we could be doing and what we must do. Lets just be good to our Mother.
